Volunteering
Classroom Assistance
Discretion is left up to the classroom teacher, but it is not uncommon for a volunteer to work one on one with a particular student. Volunteers may be asked to assist them with their school work, daily living skills or their vocational tasks. Depending on the day volunteers visit the classroom, they may also be asked to attend the community outing and assist while out in the community. Other ways volunteers might assist in the classroom include helping to design and decorate bullentin boards and placing art or school work on display in the classroom and hallways.
Day of Caring
The United Way has an annual "Day of Caring" in June. This event is hosted and put together by the United Way, but Sherwood Center has been a grateful recipient of this event's efforts for 15 years. Volunteers can go to the United Way website and request to be sent to a particular location to help out on the specified date. While at Sherwood Center on "Day of Caring," volunteers will typically help sanitize the building, paint a few classroom/offices, assist with a large construction project (changes every year) as well as grounds clean-up.
Grounds Work
Sherwood Center is an old school building so naturally maintenance is to be expected. Our Facilities Manger and Community Relations Coordinator work with large groups to organize a day/afternoon/evening where the group can come out and assist with raking leaves, cleaning the building, picking up sticks and ensuring that Sherwood Center looks its best at all times.
